Acceptance of Western Agricultural Science in 19th Century Japan In Case of Funatsu Denjibei, Skilled Farmer
Abstract Although Funatsu Denjibei had been trained as a farmer, he worked at the Komaba Agricultural School where he managed the farm and lectured students on traditional agricultural techniques. All of the other teachers at the Komaba Agricultural School were foreigners and lectured to students on Western agricultural science. Funatsu Denjibei kept company with foreign teachers, and therefore he was at the junction point of Western agricultural science and traditional agricultural techniques. In this paper, the role Funatsu Denjibei played in the establishment of modern agricultural science in Japan is considered. Moreover, his attitude against adopting Western agricultural science is clarified. Funatsu Denjibei contributed to the establishment of modern agricultural science in Japan by imparting empirical knowledge to agriculturists. On one hand, he acquired knowledge of Western agricultural science through the foreign teachers at Komaba Agricultural School and the young agriculturists who graduated from it, and he used some of this knowledge when explaining agricultural techniques in lecture meetings. However, his knowledge of Western agricultural science did not influence his agricultural techniques. The agricultural techniques he advocated were established by an accumulation of experience, to which he attached great importance. When ideas held by other agriculturists ran contrary to his experience, he retorted with an argument and strongly questioned their opinions.
