The Politics of Poverty in America:

Conflict and Change

Abstract

One of the nation’s most persistent and obstinate problem is poverty. Public- and private- sector endeavors notwithstanding, millions of Americans are impoverished. In this dissertation, I will examine America’s poverty in two sections. I begin by defining the problem. I pay particular attention to current debates over how the poor should be counted and equally important, what factors account for poverty in America. Once I define the problem, I look at the range of policies that have emerged over the last half-century briefly. In doing that I concentrate primarily on federal programs and its reforms.
